Artist's Comments

This was my first project for my Masters Degree. A real flesh-and-blood client in downtown Bryan, TX had purchased a former farm and truck dealership building and wanted ideas on how to convert the building into a more commercial attraction for downtown.

I chose to redesign the central room of the structure (seen in the picture on the top left), which had a nice clearstory that allowed a lot of light in the room. The client felt that the space had a lot of potential to be a "quiet and meditative" area. I proposed convert the room into an interior garden, complete with a large waterfall and colored glass windows. All these natural features would contrast with the industrial setting, as if nature had reclaimed it (as seen in the top right picture of the model).

I also decided to retain the old exhaust tubes that hung from the ceiling, since they provided and interesting feature to the otherwise blocky building and converted them into light fixtures that would be used at night, giving the garden a whole different looks than its daytime persona. Also at night, the stream going through the garden would also be backlit, but with "cool" colors to contrast with the reds and yellows dominating the ceiling. These features can be seen in the two model pictures on the bottom.

Wow. That's one psychedelic garden at night... how many colors DID you use? Christmas lights? ^_~

Yep, I used two elegant strands of 35 Christmas Lights and switched the colors around to where they were best suited. Being that I bought them from Hobby Lobby, there were five colors; red, blue, green, orange, and magenta.

Wow... So cool... I wanted to get photos of this old building for months, as I pass it every day going home from work... And then all of a sudden they were fixing all the broken windows... :faint: There went my great photos... lol...

It is really exciting seeing this old building being rennovated! And very exciting to find the person responsible for this on dA!!! Very Cool!

Looking forward to seeing this building finally finished!

Thanks for the comment. As for what Ms. Conlee is actually doing with the old Intl. Harvester building, I really have no clue. This interior garden was simply my proposal. There were 14 other designs from my class that were presented to give her ideas on, I'd be shocked if the finished building actually turned out to be my garden (which I seriously doubt since it would have been an expensive undertaking). What I think what Ms. Conlee intends for this building is to turn it into a multipurpose building with a restuarant, gym, and club.

As for photos of the building, if you would like to see mine, just give me a message.

Since school is out for me right now, I haven't driven by there in a couple of weeks... so I haven't seen other than the repairs to windows and doorways... My daughter ( *Yoseiiscooler ) and I really loved your design and agree a garden would be really great! I would love to see more photos of the building... So, you have no idea which design was chosen? That sucks... Would be nice to know... I guess we'll find out one day soon as the sign out front, says that it will be open Summer 2008...

Well, the only thing that Ms. Conlee told us that was certain was that the front room (facing Main St.) is going to be a restaurant. Pretty simular to what she did for the Old Bryan Marketplace across the street. She still wasn't sure what she wanted to do the other three rooms. I'll email you the pictures.
:iconpepelepewissexier:
That would be wonderful. Thanks so very much!
